Externship Information

Colorado Equine Veterinary Services is located in Peyton, 25 miles northeast of Colorado Springs, and provides great learning opportunities for qualified individuals. CEVS provides a high-quality extern experience in a busy equine practice.

CEVS’ Extern Program is designed to give veterinary and technician students exposure to all aspects of equine practice including but not limited to emergency/critical care, field surgery, reproduction, lameness, and dentistry. Externs will also be able to observe and assist with procedures. One-on-one mentorship is a central focus of the program. Our goal for the externship is to provide an opportunity for professional and personal growth.

Our diagnostic equipment allows us to perform video gastroscopy, video endoscopy, computer digital radiography, and digital ultrasound. Our investment in high-quality equipment allows us to provide state-of-the-art equine diagnostics in Southern Colorado. We also have in-house blood work equipment which allows us to receive same-day CBCs, chemistries, Fibrinogens, and more. Some of our routine procedures include power floats with access to more invasive dental procedures, minor to moderate surgeries such as enucleation and castrations, lameness examinations, artificial insemination, radiographs, ultrasound and IRAP procedures. We also offer equine chiropractic and acupuncture along with our mobile vet service.

Colorado Equine Veterinary Services’ facilities contain a six-stall barn including ICU and mare/foal stalls, five outdoor runs, an expanded treatment area with stocks, and indoor expanded laboratory space. We also have an indoor arena for lameness exams in inclement weather.

We have high exposure opportunities with emergencies. We are chosen to vet horse shows and rodeos in the surrounding Pikes Peak region. This allows us to see our current clients along with meeting new people in the horse world.

Veterinary Student Externship

Externships are offered to current veterinary students, with a preference given to 3rd and 4th year students. During the externship, the individual will assist all doctors in providing care including patient treatments and after-hours emergencies. It will allow for equal time with all doctors in a supportive and mentoring environment.

Veterinary Technology Externship

CEVS offers veterinary technician externship opportunities. Veterinary technician externs will work alongside our veterinarians and full-time Certified Veterinary Technicians in handling everyday tasks as well as assisting with ambulatory and in-clinic appointments. Our staff will ensure that you get the most out of your time with us and meet all of your curriculum requirements during your externship. We request that along with your application you include the list of procedures that you need to fulfill. These positions are limited and strongly based on the season.

CEVS provides basic housing and cooking facilities for visiting students free of charge. Housing is here at the clinic, which keeps students close to the action for night and weekend emergencies.
We encourage students to visit for 2-3 weeks to gain maximum exposure to the practice.

Students may apply for externships by emailing us at colovets@gmail.com. Please include 2-3 options for dates, preferably with Friday arrival and Sunday departure, although this can be flexible based on your travel requirements. That email should also include an attachment of your letter of intent and resume.

A detailed document with more specific externship guidelines will be provided upon confirmation of your visit.

Volunteer Opportunities

Colorado Equine Veterinary Services offers seasonal volunteer opportunities to all students over the age of 18 who are looking for experience in large animal veterinary medicine. Volunteers will work alongside our veterinarians and certified veterinary technicians as well as veterinary students and veterinary technician students in handling the everyday tasks of a full-service large animal hospital. Volunteer positions are limited and based on the season. Housing will not be provided for volunteers.
